ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

We make no secret of the fact that we are primarily quantity surveyors, so how can we do Architectural design work? QS’s are trained across ALL elements and trades, so understanding how a building ‘fits together’ is second nature.  We’re used to looking at drawings and understanding concepts in 3-dimensions, so if we can put this skill down on paper we can do design. Our first ever design job demonstrates this: we were acting for a building contractor undertaking a local school project.  The project had a steel framed hipped roof, but as designed, an entrance door would be fouled by the steelwork and could not open.  After a couple of weeks the ‘designer’ couldn’t come up with a solution, so the builder asked if we could do a drawing to solve the problem.  They had the drawing the next day, the job was completed and we started getting comissions for architecural design. If you want a fancy Architect designed show stopper - we wouldn’t do it, but if you want good technical drawings that your builder will appreciate, that’s right up our street. We survey and prepare drawings and specifications necessary to apply for planning permission and building regulations approval. This can be augmented up to full project management if required.
